The Kurly Klips: Clip In Review

I've just got my hand on Kurly Klips, Naturally kinky curly clip in hair extensions. Over the last few years weave technology has been getting better and better, with the popularity of  of naturally kinky coily hair you can now get your hands on 'natural' textured weaves made from 100% human hair. This great but personally I'm not a huge fan of sew in weaves, I like to get to my scalp easily so it can breath, it's also a style that I feel is dependent on seeing a stylist. So new line Kurly Klips seemed like a great concept as they have the effect of a sew in weave but you can apply them in less the 10 minutes at home!

 Kurly Klips are made from 100% Remi Human hair, they come in two different textures, 'My Spirals' and 'My Fro' and come in 3 different lengths 'Black Mermaid' 'Bobcat' and 'Shoulder Chic'

 I was sent 'My Fro' in 'Shoulder Chic' in colour natural black, they come in packs of 7, which include: 1 X 10 inch weft
1 X 6 inch weft
5 X 3 inch weft
I got two packs and used 10 of the wefts, due to my side being cut low, most people will need to packs for a full head.

The Kurly Klips are simple to use, I parted the section of hair that I want to use to cover the wefts (I left the front of my hair) and flat twisted the rest of my hair vertically and applied Kurly Klips diagonally starting from my nape using the 3 inch wefts and working my way up. 'My Fro' texture is tightly coiled but defined, over time I think the hair will appear more textured but it arrived looking natural and feels really soft. the roots are silkier than the ends but I think it blends well. The hair can be washed and and coloured. I love how versatile the Kurly Clips are, you can go big and bold or just add a little length and body to your hair. for a pack of 7 wefts it's $179.99 (which is around £118.00) which works out quite well seen as you are cutting out the cost of installation and you can put them in and take them out when you want to. I'll definitely be rocking these while I grow out my current hair cut, the clips are stress free for my hair and also for my lifestyle and I can't wait to experiment with Kurly Klips!

This is one of the longest breaks I've had between blog posts in 5 years, forgive me but my last post was 10 days ago. I've been busy enjoying the sun with this munckin so (who could resist?) and having a much needed social media detox.

On Documentary Film Styles: Historical and Sociological Perspectives

One of Film Studies For Free's regular automated web searches discovered the following, just published volume of essays of great interest to documentary specialists: an issue of InterDisciplines - Journal of History and Sociology (Vol 4, No 1 [2013]) on Documentary Film Styles. Historical and Sociological Perspectives.

 

Each essay has much to recommend it, but FSFF particularly enjoyed Tanja Seider's discussion of the essay film in a postcolonial context, along with Bernt Schnettler's comprehensive study of visual research methods

Brown Fat: It's a Big Deal

Non-shivering thermogenesis is the process by which the body generates extra heat without shivering.  Shivering is a way for the body to use muscular contractions to generate heat, but non-shivering thermogenesis uses a completely different mechanism to accomplish the same goal: a specialized fat-burning tissue called brown fat.  Brown fat is brown rather than white because it's packed with mitochondria, the power plants of the cell.  Under cold conditions, these mitochondria are activated, using a specialized molecular mechanism called uncoupling* to generate heat.

The mechanism of brown fat activation has been worked out fairly well in rodents, which rely heavily on non-shivering thermogenesis due to their small body size.  Specialized areas of the hypothalamus in the brain sense body temperature (through sensors in the brain and body), body energy status (by measuring leptin and satiety signals), stress level, and probably other factors, and integrate this information to set brown fat activity.  The hypothalamus does this by acting through the sympathetic nervous system, which heavily innervates brown fat.  As an aside, this process works basically the same in humans, as far as we currently know.  Those who claim that rodent models are irrelevant to humans are completely full of hot air**, as the high degree of conservation of the hypothalamus over 75 million years of evolution demonstrates.

Two new studies concurrently published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation last week demonstrate what I've suspected for a long time: brown fat can be 'trained' by cold exposure to be more active, and its activation by cold can reduce body fatness.

Zucchini: The Home Gardener's Worst Friend? With bonus garden-related rambling.

One of my main gardening goals has been to harvest more of something than I can eat, despite my limited gardening space here in the Emerald City.  I want the feeling of abundance that comes with having to preserve and give away food because I can't eat it all.

Enter zucchini.  My grandfather used to say that in New Jersey in summertime, you'd have to keep your car doors locked, otherwise the car would be full of zucchini the next time you got in!  In mid-May, I planted two starts from my local grocery store labeled "green zucchini", with no further information.  I put them in a bed that used to be a pile of composted horse manure, and that I had also cover cropped, mulched, fertilized, and loosened deeply with my broadfork.  They look pleased.
