Paleo Diet Article in Sound Consumer

Diposting oleh good reading on Senin, 30 Januari 2012

I recently wrote an article for my local natural foods grocery store, PCC, about the "Paleolithic" diet.  You can read it online here.  I explain the basic rationale for Paleo diets, some of the scientific support behind it, and how it can be helpful for people with certain health problems.  I focused in particular on the research of Dr. Staffan Lindeberg at the University of Lund, who has studied non-industrial populations using modern medical techniques and also conducted clinical diet trials using the Paleo diet.

Short Cornrows, Green Rubber Bands, and Two Strand Twists

Diposting oleh good reading

After over three weeks of Syd's mini twists, I was ready to get back to some styling. Unfortunately, we didn't have a ton of time, so I had to pick something reasonably quick. I decided to do some short cornrows in the front, with some bright green elastic bands to make it fun. Then I just put the back into our staple...two strand twists.

After a few days with the twists in, Syd removed them to give herself a twist out for a couple more days. Here's how that looked just before the style came down.

This is an age appropriate style that is simple and easy, while still allowing for some variety as the twists become a twist out.

Super Easy Valentine's Cake

Diposting oleh good reading

I made this cake a few years ago, when I was pretty new to fondant. Even so, the total decorating time was less than 45 minutes. It's so easy. All you need is fondant and nesting heart cutters, and you're set!
(Sorry there are no photos here of the process, it was a few years ago, and I just ran out of time to recreate it.)

What You Need:
One 8-9" cake, iced
Approx. 1.5 pounds white fondant*
Red Gel Food Coloring
Nesting Heart Fondant Cutters

*One box of Wilton fondant (the most readily available is 1.5 lbs. But you can click this link to see my "Great Fondant Comparison" where I put 3 store-bought and 2 homemade fondants to the test).

Start by covering the cake with fondant. Then, color about a golf ball-sized piece of fondant red, and another pink. Roll the fondant to about 1/8" thick. Cut one heart with the largest cutter. Position the medium-sized cutter inside of the large cutter, cut out that one, leaving the large heart outline, and then cut the smallest heart out of the medium. Alternate the colors of the outlines to create the patterns you see here. If necessary, you can brush the backs of the hearts with a little clear vanilla extract to help them stick.

This cake would also look great if you just ice the cake with your favorite icing, and put the fondant cut-outs on that. Then you'd be talking about a really, really easy cake!

HEADBANDS ARE PERFECT LOW-MAINTENANCE WAY TO UPGRADE A STYLE...
they can even help correct a bad hair day ~
but sometimes they can look daggy ~ or even worse, give you a headache.

So here's a little headband help...
* Consider your face shape. If you have a small face and fine features, a big floral number is going to overwhelm you. Go for a simple, thin headband. If you have a full face and prominent features, choose a thicker band. It's all about proportion.

* Hairbands are like jeans: Stretch helps. Not only does elastic keep a smooth, sleek shape, it's also more comfortable.

* Stay far, far away from molded plastic. Even though they may look sleek and mod, you'll have a headache after a few hours.

* Treat headbands like jewellery. Once you start adding earrings, a necklace, a bracelet, and so on, it's a hot mess. Keep your other accessories to a minimum.

Conversations from the REMIX CINEMA Workshop

In conversation with Richard Misek at the Remix Cinema Workshop 2011

Film Studies For Free took a little break to meet a few deadlines in the last two weeks. Normal service resumes this week, thankfully.

In the next days, there will be an entry of links in memory of Theo Angelopoulos who sadly died last week. So, do please come back for that.

Today, though, FSFF posts links to some recently uploaded audio files which very valuably record great interviews with the contributors to an important workshop conference that took place last March at Oxford University.

The event explored the topic of Remix Cinema: the collaborative making, deconstruction and distribution of digital artefacts, and was part of a wider project exploring the role of audio-visual remix practices in contemporary digital culture.

Thanks to everyone taking part for making these excellent resources available to everyone working in the field.

An Update: Life and the Mini Twists

Diposting oleh good reading on Sabtu, 28 Januari 2012

Hi everyone. I apologize for being gone for a few weeks. Illness and a few other serious life situations made January a fairly rough month for us. But we always bounce back, and I'm happy to say we're ready to get back to life as we know it, which includes a lot more time spent on hair and the blog.

You probably remember Syd's mini twist style I did at the beginning of the month. Those twists lasted about 3 1/2 weeks, but we really didn't get a chance to do any styling. Syd wore her twists down or half-up pretty much every day of those 3 1/2 weeks. I wish they would have lasted a little longer, but Syd wears hoodies a lot during the winter and those hoods aren't very good at preserving hair styles. Her hair was getting very frizzy and I could see the shed hairs making their way out of the twists and causing tangles wherever they went.

Here are a few pics I snapped right before removing the twists. I know what you're probably thinking. There doesn't look like much frizz, right? I agree. But only because these pictures just don't show what I could see in person. There were many tangles to fight during the removal process. Another week wouldn't have been a good thing.

While removing the twists, I detangled with my FINGERS ONLY. A comb would have snapped those tangled hairs and led to a lot of damage. Sure, it took a little longer, but her hair definitely appreciated it!
