A long, overdue update

The last few years have brought many challenges and many gifts. While it has not been an easy path, I am so grateful for all I have received and learned.

I have been very quiet about my journey, at first because I had been too ill to write and later because I had too much to share to begin. I am so grateful for all the support and love I have received from my friends and family and the software development community.

In just a few short weeks, I will be labeled as officially cured of Aveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. It was just three years ago, that I found myself praying to make Christmas and unable to imagine my daughter's second birthday.

Today, I find myself planning her 4th birthday!

I'd like to share a bit of my story and to connect everyone with my journey.

During treatment, I lost many friends and watched many suffer. As a pediatric patient, I lived at the Ronald McDonald house and was treated with children. Day in and out, I watched parents by the bedside of their little ones. Experiencing a pain I could not imagine. Each day I was so thankful it was me who was ill and not my daughter.

The Ronald McDonald house was a home for me. It is an amazing community and home for so many families. Without this wonderful support system, there would be many families without the means to live by the best hospitals for their children's disease.

And in the world of cancer, where you receive treatment has a huge impact not only on your chance of survival, but the experience along the way.

How fortunate I was to be living in New York, and be treated at Sloan Kettering. I fought hard to be treated in an outpatient facility before my treatment started because I didn't want to leave my little girl. I am very thankful the doctors convinced me to be in Sloan, which saved my life. It afforded me the ability to have experimentally high doses of chemotherapy and tolerate the side effects.

As a pediatric patient I also benefited from the activities for the children, such as the clowns, pizza Wednesdays, musicians on call and dance therapy. Every doctor and nurse greeted every patient with genuine love and compassion.

About 1/2 way through treatment, I started 6 weeks of radiation.  People often think of radiation as easier than chemo, but as my oncologist says it makes you "sick as a dog." The side effects of radiation are intense and long lasting.

After radiation completed, I continued on my chemotherapy regime. The drug doses were reduced 25% and then 50% -- alarming for any patient to hear, although it turned out that everyone drops their dose. We joked that they should tell you that you are dropping to normal high dose levels of chemo as that was true and less scary.

By March, I was excited to receive the results of my post radiation scans. We all expected me to be officially cancer free and it was a surprise (at least to me) that the cancer remained. I was told I would need surgery, a surgery I had been told at the beginning of treatment was unlikely to cure this disease since it was in my sinuses.

While this seemed like another uphill battle, it ended up being a wonderful break in treatment. The delay in chemo to prepare for surgery gave me time to spend with my daughter, where I was healthy enough to pick her up (something I had rarely been able to do in the previous 8 months).

This break also gave me the mental focus and alertness to read Anticancer, which inspired me to take up a new diet and revisit my role in curing the disease. I started a healthy, anticancer diet (which was a big change from the chocolate hagaan daaz diet I had taken up during radiation -- in my defense it was all I could tolerate because I had no saliva, everything else tasted horrible and it was painful to eat!) and tried to incorporate very light yoga into my routine.

I was scheduled to be released from the hospital the day of my 30th birthday. A milestone I was unsure I'd meet just a few months prior. And it was a great birthday gift to be officially cancer free. I began chemo the following week and completed treatment without any other breaks by July of 2010.

At the end of treatment, I was as sick as ever. I had been through a year of intense chemo, radiation, lack of movement and emotional trauma. I was eager to start healing both physically and emotionally. At first I focused on getting through my August scans.

When they came back clear, I was so grateful.

It was at my daughter's second birthday and I was officially cancer free.

The next year I was devoted to being with my daughter and regaining my physical health. I continued on the anticancer diet and spent much time dedicated to being healthy. Physical exercise was incredibly difficult for months after treatment, though I was able to add gentle yoga.

I was unable to return to work physically and emotionally. As the year went by, the disease returned in every friend but one from treatment.

In everyone, it returned the week they went back to work. It seemed like a rather risky venture to return to work!

One year after treatment ended, I celebrated as I knew that 75% of reoccurances happened within the first 2 years of diagnosis for rhabdomyosarcoma. My physical health was much improved from the previous year and every month I felt like a new person.

My focus shifted from physical healing to emotional and spiritual healing.

I found a yoga and meditative practice that helped me heal from the traumatic events of the previous years and let go of many attachments that were unhealthy. In the fall, I became certified in an eclectic healing technique that I had personally experienced transformation though, both physically and emotionally.

By the winter of 2011, I had accepted I was in an unhealthy, unhappy marriage and very much wanted to live in New York City. I needed to be close to the RMH and Sloan so that I could share some light with these challenged communities.

By January 2012, I found myself living in NYC and traveling every month to become certified as a yoga teacher. My dream of helping other patients and survivors was becoming real.

During my spiritual journey, I connected with a person who is a bit of a mathematician and very wise in esoteric spiritual wisdom. He and I shared a vision of helping people find Love using this wisdom.  Before I knew it, we created a partnership and Love Through Wisdom was born.

So, after a year dedicated to following my heart, traveling, studying, meditating and praying, I landed back in the world of software.

I am so grateful for all for your support through the years. I had been mostly silent and I want you to know that the healing love brings is infinite. Thank you.

Tip for Tuesday - Cold Cookie Dough

Diposting oleh good reading

If you've ever used my Vanilla Sugar Cookie Recipe, you know that it calls for the dough to be rolled, then refrigerated for 30 minutes to an hour before you cut out the cookies.

Sometimes, I like to fudge that. When I'm busy. When I'm impatient. When I just don't feel like following the rules. But I've learned why you actually do want to let the cookie dough get cold before you cut out the cookies.

The Review: Cooler2Co-wash

I've been Co-washing my mini twists every few days and I'm currently using Root2Tip, Citrus-Sky Cooler2Co-wash for kids.  At £5 for a 250ml bottle it is great value for money. Cooler2So-wash contains glycerine which works as a great cleanser in-between washes. I use a generous amount and leave for 5 minutes as directed, I then stay under the shower head and allow the water pressure to ease out the products so my coils stay in tack and to stop my Mini Twists from matting. I must say Cooler2Co-wash leaves my hair baby soft and smells divine! This is a great mild product for kids and adults alike!

As a little treat comment below to WIN a sample sized Triple 'M' Miracle Moisture Milk & Nourish Hydrate and Shine ME Butter from Root2Tip (please leave a way for me to contact you if you win!)

Lush's Emotional Brilliance range

This may be all of my favourite things rolled into one, Lush (one of my favourite British brands) has launched it's cruelty free, natural cosmetic range Emotional Brilliance. A line of thirteen liquid lip colors which double up as cream blushers, eleven liquid eyeliners and six cream eyeshadows and even offers a mascara with only one perservative. Products retail at £14.50 which is not cheap but it does contain a lot of goodies, though for regular Lush users you will not be surprised to know that some of the range does contain parabens. The range is based on the idea of colour therapy and colours evoking moods and shades are named as such e.g. a vibrant red lipstick called Strong and Motivation a teal blue eyeliner. It's worth making a visit to a store to get a better idea of the concept behind it.
Eyes Right Mascara £12
The lipstick recipe for the liquid lipsticks is a super softening base, which is a simple blend of organic jojoba oil, candelilla wax and rose wax, intensely skin-softening and soothing.
Lush Liquid Lipstick
The eyeliners are made with the same nourishing base as the cream eyeshadows with a soothing rose petal infusion and skin-softening almond and jojoba oils, there’s also glycerine to help carry the colour. The cupuaçu butter in the eyeliners helps to set the colour pigment nicely, these beautiful colours are easy to use and able to create a softer look if required.

I love the droplet packaging and sponge applicator on the lipsticks and eyeshadows and the eyeliners have a fine point brush for precision application. For those of you that are anywhere near a Lush store I urge you to go in and check these out and take part in the Lush colour wheel, for those of you can't then click on the link below to learn more about Emotional Brilliance.

Monkey Cakes: How to Transfer a Picture to a Cake

Diposting oleh good reading on Senin, 30 Juli 2012

I refer to my children as monkeys all of the time, because, let's be honest, the difference between a 5-year-old and a monkey is hair and a tail.

So, when a co-worker asked if I'd make her son's first birthday cakes with a monkey theme, I had to say yes. She sent me the invitation, and I worked from there.

I'll show you how to transfer an image from something like an invitation onto your cake.

What You Need:
Pattern/Image to Transfer
Parchment Paper
Piping Gel (similar to corn syrup, found at craft/cake stores or online here.)

In Immemory of Chris Marker (1921-2012)

Un monde plus vide et plus triste: Chris Marker n'y est plus.
Jean-Michel Frodon, July 30, 2012

Five years to the day since the deaths of two other legendary filmmakers Michelangelo Antonioni and Ingmar Bergman, and on the day after his 91st birthday, the death of Chris Marker has been announced.

Film Studies For Free is collecting links to Markerian scholarly and related work online in his immemory. So please come back for frequent updates in the hours and days ahead.

Meanwhile, David Hudson is assembling one of his magnificent tributes at the Keyframe Daily website. And the essential archive Notes from the Era of Imperfect Memory -- devoted to Chris Marker's work on the web -- will undoubtedly respond to this sad event, too.

                          how-to use HAIR OILS

Diposting oleh good reading on Minggu, 29 Juli 2012

HOT HAIR OILS ARE PERFECT FOR...
de-frizzing, adding extra shine, or when used as a leave-in, they give you the silkiest and smoothest locks ever - BUT there are a few steady rules you must follow to get the maximum effect.

Here's what to 'do' and 'don't' - so you don't get the greasies:
                          1. Do: Use it as a treatment before you wash your hair. Apply a generous amount to hair the night before you shampoo and condition your hair. Make sure to concentrate on the ends and work up to the scalp. You should brush, braid hair, and sleep with the oil in. It's also very hydrating for the scalp, so for people who have seasonal dry scalp, this will help!

                          2. Do: Use it as a leave-in treatment after you've washed your hair. For a leave-in, apply a 3-5 drops to freshly washed hair and again concentrate on the ends and always apply to them first, for they are the most porous. If you have an oily scalp, don't apply past the midstrand of your hair.

                          3. Don't: Forget to use all natural products.  Just a few drops at the ends of your hair after its dried will get rid of any flyaways and will add the most amazing sheen that isn't oily to your locks.

Eva’s an orphan, who learns of her family’s history in Prague after inheriting an ancient mansion from a distant relative. This “mansion inheritance” story is nothing new to the hidden object genre, but the story in Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends is set to go much deeper than that, as Eva will find love in a shopkeeper's grandson, and will be tested by the ghosts in the deserted home.
Your journey as Eva will take you throughout Prague, as you’ll explore an antique shop full of mysterious books and artifacts, an ancient cemetery with creepy crypts, an alchemy lab and modern café, among other locations. The story will become more complex as you go, as Eva finds that she has ties to the Holy Roman Emperor and a band of black magicians that are working to creating a golem to destroy the entire world.

                          mother and child meal

Diposting oleh good reading on Sabtu, 28 Juli 2012

Ever since my elder child went on to secondary school, with longer school days, he hardly comes home for lunch. Gone were the days when the three of us would chit chat over the lunch table. With extra lessons and activities in the afternoons, I only get to have lunch with his younger brother twice or if I am lucky, three times on a normal school week. I know I shouldn't complaint, but I find it difficult to cook for just the two of us. I am ever so tempted to rely on take-outs instead of turning on the stove. But, the feeling of guilt will always come haunting me if I fail to put home cooked meals on the table.

So, I resort to fuss-free, whenever possible, fume-free, quick and easy to pull together, under 30mins meals...just like this parent and child donburi.

I was introduced to the Japanese cuisine way back in the early 90s. The first time I read/saw the kanji '親子丼' or oyakodon on the menu, I formed the impression that it is so named because it is a 'mother (母親) and child (孩子) meal'...a loving okasan cooks this special dish for her child; mother and child then sit down to enjoy the dish together. Indeed it was a very heart-warming scene I had conjured, a parent-child bonding thingy because I had subconsciously interpreted it based on the Chinese context of the characters '親子'. It was only many years later that I read that the parent and child here refers to the two main ingredients, chicken and egg! I felt really sheepish when I realised my mistake. Can you almost imagine how that scene in my mind was shattered? very anti-climate isn't it? lol! I should have known better since I learned long ago that many kanji words have totally different meaning from the Chinese characters.

When I first attempted to replicate this chicken-and-egg donburi at home, I used pre-mixed pack. Ok, I know, it is very embarrassing, but what to do for someone who was, and still is, a culinary idiot. Glad to say, I have since progressed from pre-mix, to cooking it, almost, from scratch. But it still lacks the real authentic flavour as I don't make my own dashi. I can easily cheat by using instant dashi powder but I don't want to, as the ones I saw available on the local supermarket shelves come with added msg. To avoid the hassle of making dashi, I used water...and, a dash of fish sauce! Believe it or not, it comes quite close to the real thing, at least my untrained, unsophisticated taste buds makes me think so. For the time being, this is the way I prepare this dish, but I am sure in time to come, I will make dashi from scratch.

P/S: I use this brand "Megachef' fish sauce(it doesn't contain msg), my friend VB has kindly sent it to me all the way from Hong Kong :)

                          Easy Oyakodo
                          (serves 2)

                          Ingredients:

1 large chicken thigh, deboned, remove skin, cut into bite site
1 medium size yellow onion, thinly sliced
                          2 eggs, very lightly beaten
                          2 tablespoons mirin
1 tablespoon sake (I replaced with ryori sake, Japanese cooking rice wine)
1/2 cup dashi (I replaced with water and a dash of Thai fish sauce)
2 tablespoons soy sauce (I used Japanese soy sauce, Yamasa brand)
                          1/2 teaspoon sugar
some spring onions, cut into 1" length
                          2 bowls of cooked rice

                          Method:
In a small frying pan, heat mirin and sake and bring to a boil. Add dashi, soya sauce and sugar, bring to a boil. Add onions, cook till soften, about 2 mins. Add chicken meat, leave to simmer for about 2 to 3 mins or until the chicken is cooked. Toss in the spring onions. Drizzle in the eggs, do not stir. Turn off the heat once the eggs is almost set. Place rice in a large serving bowl. Pour chicken and egg mixture over the rice. Serve with nori (optional).

I'd post pictures, but I'm too vain to accept what my face looks like at this point (steroids - which I need, cause some intense facial swelling).  I know I talk a lot about ice cream, but this is much more than what ice cream might cause.  I'll work on snapping something acceptable tomorrow (there will be another outing).  Red on the other hand has no shame so...
