3 top styling tips for YOUR TOPKNOT

WANT TO PERFECT YOUR TOPKNOT OR BALLERINA BUN?

Try these  3 easy top tips...

Tip 1: Backcomb your ponytail to create a bigger, more secure bun. If your hair is slippery straight or on the fine side, this is especially helpful. A little bit of teasing not only creates the illusion of more hair, it gives it enough grip to stay up all day or night. 

Tip 2: Jackknife the bobby pins into your hair to keep it in place. If you're using bobby pins to create the bun, here's how to make it super secure: Push the feet of the bobby pin up through the edge of the bun and then jackknife the bobby pin back down, towards the centre of the bun. 

Tip 3: Wrap or tuck the bun tightly and then loosen it a bit with your fingers. Most of us want a little bit of fuzz or messiness in an updo, but if you start messy, your topknot {or whatever type of bun you're creating} will get really messy by the end of the night. Start with a tighter, more secure bun and then loosen strands lightly with your fingers to make it look less perfect.

2013 hair trend: SIDE-PARTED BED-HEAD HAIR

ANOTHER TAKE ON THE MESSY-YET-GLAMOROUS BED HAIR HAD EMERGED AS A 

TREND FOR 2013...

The hair is side parted with a little bit of a messy wave to it and just might be the easiest do-it-yourself hairstyle as it only involves a few easy steps and very little product!

Here's the how-to-do's:

1. Start with a clean head of hair, drying it straight but not straight that it’s sleek. The look here that you’re creating is bed hair so natural texture and waves can be be maintained whether you have short or long hair.

2. Once your hair is completely dry, dampen it with a leavein, volumising spray. Rough dry your hair again using just your fingers, ensuring that you lift your roots a bit to create volume. It’s not 1960s-style volume that you’re looking to create, but rather volume of the ‘just out of bed’ variety.

3. Create a natural side part – there’s right or wrong side for this interpretation of bed hair, simply select whichever parting suits you.

4. Using your hand, section off the part of the front of your hair that going to frame your face. This section will sweep across your face opposite the side part. It mightn’t cover it as extremely as it does for Cara Delevingne in the photo above, but it’s likely that it will naturally fall across part of your face.

5. Roll this front section into pin curls. Use duckbill clips to hold it in place. Leave it for a while so that a subtle wave is created.

6. Repeat the above two steps for the different sections of your hair side from the front. You’ll want to create pin curls opposite your side part and on the rear of your head.

LOVE THIS BUMPED-UP MESSY PONYTAIL? 

Here's the trick that has made this ponytail look a little more 'spesh' than normal... wedding hair INSPIRATION

BLAKE LIVELY'S SIDE-BRAIDED CHIGNON IS PERFECT FOR YOUR BIG DAY...

Here's how to do: First fatten up strands by misting on a hair powder then part hair on the side and pull into a ponytail. Leave a section an inch thick free. Braid the piece that's left out of the ponytail, secure the bottom with a clear elastic, and pull on the braid with your fingers to loosen it up a bit. Using a larger elastic, tie the braid into the bigger ponytail. Wrap hair into a bun, keeping it in place with U-shaped pins. If you choose an updo, don't wash your hair the day of the ceremony - it won't stay. Get a blowdry the day before for your rehearsal dinner then, for your wedding day, your hair will be prepped and ready to style.

ALEXA'S LONG 'LOB' IS PERFECT FOR ALL HAIRED TYPES, 

particularly fine hair!

To copy-cat the cut: Part hair down the middle and cut it in a clean line to above the collarbone. Then, to give it a little swing, add some long, barely there layers. The fringe should be trimmed to the cheekbones. 

To copy-cat styling: Dab a shine serum on wet hair and blow-dry it straight using a round brush. Flip hair upside down and mist with a light hair spray running your fingers through it to loosen the layers. Bring your head back up and finish with a quick blast from the hair dryer at the roots.

the slick PONYTAIL

A HIGH PONYTAIL NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE FOR SUMMER

- especially if you keep it super-slick... 

 To ensure that frizz and flyaways aren't going to ruin your look, work a pea-size drop of smoothing lotion into your roots and hairline before blow-drying. Brush the hair back and secure it just below your crown. To make your ponytail gleam, rub a drop of shine serum between your palms, them run them over the tail from base to ends. 

+ If you're at the beach for the day, you can add a dollop of leave-in conditioner instead of the smoothing lotion to condition and protect your hair! 

 PS. This style works even better if your hair is a bit dirty!
