Crystal Afro @ Lolas Curls Healthy Hair Meet-Up

It looks like 2012 is going to be packed full of natural hair events right up until the Summer at least, which is great considering last year there were hardly any.
Just recently I was at the Lolas Curls Healthy Hair Meet-Up in north London and was surprised by the number of ladies from the States who were also there getting a taster of some Brit-hospitality.

Lola is the author of the Lolas Curls Blog and Youtube channel and has clearly made some great progress since going natural 2 years ago.

On the day Lola gave a presentation packed full of tips on how to look after natural hair, but also how to take care of your hair if you are relaxed or transitioning. Lola has a very warm and quirky personality and was very open about her own experiences on the road to going natural which many of us could identify with.

Besides the free food, goody bags and prizes – (I won the Curly Girl Book – Yay!) I also really enjoyed the Headwrap workshop by Sister E, who also had Head-scarves and pure shea butter available to buy from The Calabash Hub stall.

Before leaving, I picked up a bottle of Flaxseed Oil from the Goody Box UKwho were also vending on the day. Flaxseed Oil is supposed to be good for adding shine, so I look forward to giving that a go.
Overall it was a really lovely Sunday afternoon and all for the price of a fiver (£5). It was quite a relief to be in such a laid back and intimate environment. I like the big events but I definitely enjoy the smaller events too. They’re not to harsh on the pocket and there’s something home-like about the atmosphere that’s just right for those dipping their toes into the realms of natural.
Well Done Lola, and thanks for a great day.

Next weekend there are a whole host of events. I’ll be taking part in The Afro Comb Afternoon at the Petrie Museum, where myself and other members of the panel working on the Origins of The Afro Comb Exhibition, will be on hand to discuss the project. It’s a FREE family day so feel free to bring your comb down, talk hair.
There’s also Root-2-Tip’s Hairducation at Earls Court Youth Center, which is going to be packed full of healthy haircare information, especially for those with children.
And finally on Sunday The Calabash Hub will be holding Kitchen Treasures – a workshop on learning how to make your own natural hair and beauty products.
