I forgot what this was.  I think it was a mini gingerbread muffin or a spice muffin. It wasn’t so tender.  I didn’t like it.

Black Forest Cake.

Yes, it’s a little lop-sided from having been smushed against the side of the box, but it was oh so good!

New York Cheesecake.

Rich, dense cheesecake.  Very good and decadent.

So Bib’s attending dance classes at Arts Umbrella, which is located in Granville Island.  This gives me a great opportunity to get some shopping done in the market! yay!

After scoring a great parking space and rushing her into her first dance class ever with seconds to spare before the start of class, I realized that she may not be so ready to be left in the class alone.  Some other mothers stayed behind, but I feel it would only prolong the sad-dog faces I’d get as she’d sneak peeks at me during class if I stayed.  Besides, the instructor encouraged us to leave.  I told Bib I’d stay 10 minutes and then would go and buy her some goodies for later.

She seemed more accepting of me leaving with the promise of doughnuts.  However, as I got up to leave and waved bye to her, she stuck out her lower lip and gave me a puppy dog look.  I smiled at her, waved again and rushed out anyway.

Turtle cheesecake!

After purchasing some fruit and veggies in the market area, I lingered around Stuart’s Bakery.  They have those gluten free Bliss Balls.  Their display of desserts and breads was so enticing!  Just look at them all! *drool*

With so many delicious looking desserts and pastries, it was a tough choice.  I ended up getting something I knew the girls would love:  cheesecake.  I decided to have chocolate myself, in the form of the Black Forest Cake.  I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed with a purchase from Stuart’s.  Everything is so good!  I especially love smelling the breads. oh man.

IMG_2203

When I picked up Bib from class, she didn’t seem out of sorts, but the instructor came over and told me that Bib spent most of class watching rather than doing.  She had to be helped along to participate.   Funny thing is that’s how she is with most of these type of activities.  She did the same thing in gymnastics for the first few classes.  Now she’s been chosen to be in the pre-competitive group.  Bib told me on the car ride home that it was her first time in a dance class and she was shy…and she wanted to watch everything first because she’s never been in a dance class.  This does make some sense I guess.  I promised her a pretty pink skirt to wear for next class and she said that that would probably help.

She promised me she’d participate next time.    I’m looking forward to exploring more shops in the market next week!

QUE? QUEJOS ARE GF!

Diposting oleh good reading on Jumat, 02 September 2011

Extra Cheese Quejos (kay-joes).

Made from manioc, these “breads” are indeed Gluten Free.
DSC_2246

Are you finding it troublesome finding GF breads that taste like bread?  Well, Quejos are not in any way like bread texturally, but they do taste good and can be used like bread to sandwich fillings.  They remind me of a chewy scone.  Often, in recipes for the Brazilian bun, I’ve seen people use tapioca starch instead.    Manioc accounts for the squeaky chew you get when you bite into it.  Yes, the bun actually squeaks between your teeth.  When you split the quejos horizontally, you will find that often it is hollow.  All the better to house lots of fillings! Think spicy pulled pork,  jalapenos, pickled onions, cabbage, tomatoes and more!

Spinach and onion Quejos.

I was getting bored of eating rice, corn tortillas and falafels lately in my bid to avoid gluten. I am not wholeheartedly embracing the GF thing as you can see from my twitterfeed and foodspotting. Hey, you can’t expect me to go GF during my anniversary?Especially since I’m not Celiac. I will be getting blood work and will be tested for gluten allergies in a few weeks. Until then, there’s still a bit of hope that I can eat a bit of gluten on occasion. If that is possible, I would be insanely happy. After avoiding gluten I have found that my acid reflux has abated. Also, I have been wondering whether the acid reflux was mostly due to my recent hemithyroidectomy. Since I have recently been diagnosed hypothyroid since the surgery, I’m on Synthroid. I have been feeling way better and less lethargic.

Jalapeno Quejos.

Craving a sandwich with something bready, I was determined to fix the problem. I’ve eaten a Quejos a while ago and I know exactly where the bakery was on Main near King Edward Ave. It’s right next to Hawker’s Delight. The lady behind the counter advised me on how to prepare and store the Quejos.

Quejos must be eaten fresh, on the day it is baked. You should split the quejos horizontally and then freeze them if you want to eat them at a later date. She told me you could allow them to come to room temperature or you could microwave them a little before toasting them. The last step, of toasting them in a toaster is the most important I think. It gives the quejos a nicer crisper texture outside. The inside will still be chewy. Then you could pile on your fillings and enjoy.

If you do not freeze your quejos, you will have rocks the next day.

DSC_2251

Sundried Tomato Quejos.

I am going to try a practice quejos sandwich to see how it holds up until lunchtime at school.   Or I guess I could bring the frozen quejos to the staffroom to toast and then fill it with sandwich fixin’s.   That sounds like too much work for me though as I’m usually short on time at lunch.  I’ll give the morning-made quejos sandwich wrapped in parchment a try first.

The Quejos at Quejos Bakery are a healthy option and they even have dairy free and soy free quejos too.  I noticed a freezer section with other GF products and GF baked goods as well.  The problem with me buying GF baked goods is that too often they weigh like hockey pucks.  If I want to eat a hockey puck, well…I’d eat a hockey puck.  I did not try any of the GF baked goods here.  I must admit they didn’t look too appealing compared to my home-baked GF goodies.  Another thing about GF baked goods is that they’re usually not fresh.  Often these alternative treats are frozen.  Practical but not so inviting if you ask me.

The primary ingredient in Quejos that make them wheat free and gluten free is manioc.  Manioc is a tuber that grows underground.  It is starchy and looks like an oversized yam.   However, it is white inside and more like tapioca.   Other names that Manioc are called are  Yuca and Cassava.  It grows from a shrub that is indigenous to South America, where manioc is a staple.  Quejos are a Brazilian bun with an old history.  They’ve been around for a while.  Tons of people love ‘em.

I highly doubt most Vancouverites have eaten a Quejos.  I think the quejos need to be pimped up a bit.   You need to stuff them with lots of good stuff like grilled eggplant, caramelized onions,  sundried tomatoes, roasted peppers, goat cheese and herbs; or short ribs, shredded cabbage,  cilantro and pickled daikon.  Hm…the possibilities!  The quejos do not have a strong flavour.  The one with extra cheese is my favourite.  However, the prettiest quejos are the spinach and onion ones.

SWEET E’S GF CHOCOLATE SILK CAKE

Flourless Chocolate Silk Cake.

DSC_2207

My sole  intent today was to get cake…preferably chocolate.  After the less than satisfactory burger I had at McDonald’s I decided that only chocolate cake could remedy the intestinal imbalance in my gut.  Fortunately, Sweet E’s was across the street.  Located next to the Red Onion, Sweet E’s specializes in really tall cakes and very tiny pretty treats.  The mini tarts are my favourite.

The cakes reside in the glass showcase.  They are all taller than they are wide.  When you buy a cake, it is housed in a cakebox that is completely square and opens on the side.  It makes sense because then you pull out the cake more easily.

DSC_2219

The Flourless Chocolate Silk Cake was decorated with ganache all over and chocolate rice on the sides. The top was decorated with fresh berries and white chocolate shards.

DSC_2230

4 layers of flourless chocolate cake sandwiched with chocolate ganache. The chocolate cake layers were dense and moist.  Very rich.  Though the cake looked small, it was extremely heavy and could feed quite a few people.  It wasn’t overly sweet.  I felt that it was  much like eating a chocolate bar.   I liked it though.

IMG_1958

I do love how the cakes and pastries are decorated.  Lots of bling! The packaging is also nice too.

IMG_1959

There were tarts, macarons, cookies, slices, confections and other sweets.

IMG_1960

Sweet E’s storefront is tucked away and you might miss it as it’s overshadowed by The Red Onion.  The striped rail is the most prominent thing attracting attention.  Maybe it needs a sign on the sidewalk.

LE MARCHÉ ST. GEORGE, A HIDDEN GEM

Diposting oleh good reading on Jumat, 12 Agustus 2011

Le Marché St. George is a quaint little corner store and cafe hidden in a quiet residential neighbourhood.  At once you are struck by its rustic French charm.  The shop is located on St. George Street and E. 28th Avenue in East Vancouver (between Main and Fraser).

700_2095

700_2089

The building is surrounded by potted herbs and plants.  In the back, my friend tells me that the owner has a bee hive and is growing veggies.

700_2093

700_2090

The immediate area surrounding the shop is lush with flowers and greenery.

700_2091

700_2092

Outside the shop, patrons drink their coffee and eat their pastries in the sunshine. Residing on the shady side of the building shielded by a couple of patio umbrellas are boxes of local organic fresh produce.

700_2070

The selection presented reminded me of my strolls through street markets in little towns in France.

marche st george

Inside, Le Marché St. George houses a variety of goodies.   It truly is a neighbourhood corner grocery store…with a definite French twist.   To the left I saw a huge refrigerator.  Basics such as organic eggs, milk and juice as well as gourmet products resided in the fridge for shoppers.  On the black chalkboard located on the end of the refrigerator were the specials of the day.

marche st george1

There was even something for children…a corner near the marble counter and till featured toys, books and gorgeous little chairs for little tushies.  Way cute!

marche st george2

It seemed as if every little nook and cranny was rammed with cool and useful stuff!  There were handcrafted preserves, knitware, towels, teas, soaps, oils, vinegars…I bet if you needed it, they had it!

marche st george3

We actually just came for a cup of tea and a chat and though seating is limited inside with a little area near each of the two windows for perhaps 6 people at most, there were some chairs outside as well.   On an early Friday afternoon I was quite surprised by the steady little stream of people coming through to buy their coffees and something to eat.   The chalkboard featured teas, coffees, paninis, croissants,  pastries and artisanal breads.

I forgot my sweater and came back later on in the afternoon, near dinnertime and it was quiet.  The store would be closing at 7pm.  I do hope this shop does well because it truly is a gem.   The products and the shop reminded me of my summer living in France with my friends and walking through the doors one feels the pace of life slow down.  The atmosphere encourages you to linger and chit chat over your drink and food.

700_2094

Because there is not much signage indicating that this is indeed a store, you might miss it.  But I guess that’s the point, isn’t it?  It’s no Starbucks or London Drugs mega-chain.   It’s cute and quaint and homey.  You will want to linger.
